19 ponds to do for Ganesha immersion

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will develop 19 artificial ponds for this Ganesh immersion holiday season. The ponds will be used for the immersion of around 57,000 Ganesha idols. At least three more ponds will be developed once their locations and sizes are finalized.
The digging of these ponds was approved in the standing committee meeting on Saturday. The locations were finalized after discussions with the Surat Shaher Ganesh Utsav Samiti. According to estimates, over 65,000 Ganesh idols will be installed by devotees in the city. Many big idols are sent for immersion in the sea at Hazira and Dumas.
Following the orders of the National Green Tribunal, the immersion in the Tapi River was stopped. Alternatively, artificial ponds are developed in each area where the idols can be immersed. The submerged idols are then sent for immersion in the sea in a truck.
Due to ponds in different areas, Ganesha Immersion the processions are separated in each area, reducing the burden on the police.
