Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer did not want to address the team after he was fired in January 2022. In fact, the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator still blames his former players for leaving canned.

“They asked me if I wanted to address the team,” Zimmer told Mark Craig Minneapolis Star Tribune. “And I said, ‘Hell no. They kicked me out.”

“I didn’t know I was supposed to go to HR and log out or whatever. Nobody told me. I got all my things, got in my truck and left.

He added, “I can tell you, I haven’t watched a Minnesota game since.”

Zimmer also admitted to Craig that he holds a grudge, which would explain his feelings toward the organization nearly three years later.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk had an opinion on the matter.

“The truth is that Zimmer fired himself. He is responsible for the team. And the buck stops with him. (The team isn’t the only thing he blames for the firing. He certainly blames GM Rick Spielman. Zimmer’s quotes about that relationship are powerful enough to merit their own post.)

“Plus, Zimmer’s final roster wasn’t all that different from the one that went 13-4 the following year. Of course, you might not have noticed.”

Some Vikings fans did not take kindly to Zimmer’s remarks.

Mike Zimmer says things like “I’m not saying nothing was my fault,” but there’s no court in @StarTribune where he takes responsibility. It’s still everyone’s fault. Sad indeed…

Zimmer eventually did well in Minnesota, going 72-56-1 in eight seasons. The Vikings have reached the playoffs three times, including an appearance in the 2017 NFC Championship Game.

The Vikings have struggled in Zimmer’s last two seasons, going 7-9 in 2020 and 8-9 in 2021.

Zimmer has a fresh start now, though, on a Cowboys team with talent and Super Bowl aspirations. He also has plenty of talent to work with, starting with perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate Micah Parsons as well as two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs.
