Colombia holding public meeting on Historic Preservation Plan

Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission is preparing to create its plan for the community. Before that, though, its seeking public input.

The commission will hold a meeting 5:30 pm Sept. 10 in the Friends Room of the Columbia Public Library, 100 W. Broadway, allowing it and community members to offer suggestions for strategies to identify and preserve historic architecture, including buildings and districts, in the city.

The Historic Preservation Plan project is funded via a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund. It has allowed the city to bring in a historic preservation consultant, David Taylor, to help the commission develop the long-range strategy of community historic preservation initiatives.

Taylor has more than 30 years of experience in preservation and has mostly worked in eastern states, New England and the Midwest, the city said. He also has assisted Joplin, Lee’s Summit, Jefferson City, Cuba, Ferguson, Moberly and now Columbia with preservation efforts.

The Historic Preservation Plan process will conclude by the spring. A second public meeting will be held at that time to present the completed plan to the community.
