Susan and David Rothacre lead by example, drive community involvement

Churches are said to promote community among people.

And a local couple — Susan and David Rothacker — aren’t just saying the words, they’re leading the effort.

“We are all privileged. Whether it’s a Sunday service or an evening study, they’re always there,” volunteer Bob Bratt said. “They’re loved by so many because of their heart and things like that. They are just special, special people.”

Susie and Dave lead many projects at Bell Church in Jefferson County.

Tresa Bratt says more people have started volunteering just because Susie and Dave are in charge. Bratt says that for her, it started with meeting Susie in choir and ended up being Susie’s helping hand when she organized the food pantry.

“It’s just that Susan has a great vibe that people want to help, and it seems like good things are happening,” Tresa said.

“Our church is like a big family and everyone helps everyone,” Susie said.

“Susan is incredibly gifted in terms of being able to relate to people. She draws love from people in things like this,” Bob Pratt said.

The food drive serves approximately 48 families, or 150 people. Linda McCullough says what she admires most are Susan’s relationships with the families she helps.

“Some of them have kids that he’s gotten close to and, you know, he just has a heart of gold,” McCullough said.

“It makes me want to be a better person, okay,” volunteer Bill Van Nuys said. “Indeed yes. It is simply uplifting. It really is”.

Van Nuys led the charge in nominating the pair. He says he’s watched every episode of Addison’s Achievers and thinks of Susie and David every time.

“I just think Susie and Dave should be recognized for everything they do in our community. They are the best people and they do such good work and good deeds,” he said.

“I was kind of surprised. It feels really good. We all appreciate each other and what we do for the church and the community. And our volunteers, they do just as much work. I couldn’t do what I do if I didn’t- o. I don’t have them.”

Susie recently had surgery and was unable to attend several of their volunteer days.

But the group says it keeps the couple in mind because volunteering not only helps those who receive the food boxes, but also creates a fun atmosphere for friendship within the church.

Pastor Seth Filburn is new to the church and says he was excited to meet the couple behind so much of the church’s activities. He says the sheer number of people they attract is a testament to who they are.

“Other places I’ve served, there’s a handful here and there, but at this bell chapel, there seems to be some uniqueness, where there’s more than that,” Filburn said.

“If you didn’t have this and that family, then what would you do? You’d be at home doing nothing, and like I said, you get a good feeling from all the families you help,” said Susie and Dave.
