New Radicals Share New Music, Open Letter To ‘Super Fan’ Doug Emhoff

Dear Doug,

When I got the call in June to join my New York deli, Russ & Daughters, for an hour of Big Oil, music and royalty in a tiny Secret Service kitchen, I wanted a bagel! Who knew that in a few weeks Kamala’s trajectory would change and soon you would become the first Mr. America. Congratulations Doug!

I learned that you have performed “You Get What You Give” hundreds of times since 2020, while your “walk on song” campaign impressed me deeply – especially when you told me that you only chose the song as a music fan, unaware of the Biden family’s emotional connection to the song through Beau.

Needless to say, we were thrilled to receive your personal invitation to sing our song live again (as we did in January 2021 for Biden’s inauguration), this time at the DNC, right before Kamala’s introduction, accepting the VP nomination. Of course, Kamala suddenly had bigger fish to fry by becoming the presidential candidate, but thanks for throwing the record out as your “come-to” song at the DNC!

I am writing this letter to send an SOS to all artists and music people across America, saying that the clock is really ticking for us to save our democracy.

The time is clearly NOW for everyone to jump in and use whatever influence they have for the greater good and support the candidate who isn’t “weirdly” advocating (love that Coach Walz!) taking away women’s rights and everyone’s freedoms. Or is he bragging that he will cancel the 2028 American presidential election!?

In that spirit, if we can talk music for a moment, we’re releasing the first New Radicals music in 25 years to unite the cause of democracy and encourage all artists to get out the vote. This is not a “comeback”; we do our little part to support the fight for freedom!

As a musical gift to you Doug and our other fans, we release our version of ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ plus our version of the Oscar nominated hit ‘Lost Stars’ from John Carney’s greatest musical . Start again. It’s co-written by New Radical Danielle Brisebois, who gave the world of Unwritten and our film and Keira Knightley’s character songs their strong female POV.

Listen to New Radicals’ ‘Lost Stars’ here and listen to ‘Murder On the Dancefloor’ here.

Interestingly, we even found out through our mutual friends that Start again heads to broadway. We’re honored that Adam Levine’s friends on Train are adapting what Adam declared “the perfect song,” and we hope Train adds more for Carney’s Broadway sequel. Date!

A lot of people may not know that ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ was almost our debut single, but then it debuted as Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s bawdy hit, which reached the global Top 10 for two times (this year since that final scene dancing naked in the often sad “real life” Saltburn).

When we spoke in NY it was clear that you are a conscientious family man who cares about his country and its people. It is what makes Kamala and you true “New Radicals” of the best kind. And anyone who knows that Hall & Oates covered “Someday We’ll Know” or the king of critics, Robert Christgau, gave our album an “A” is pretty cool in my book!

In an era where a third of “Pizzagate” Republicans think Taylor Swift is a Democrat Psy Op (who knew!?), it will be a breath of fresh air when the Harris administration passes things critical of the middle class. Like funding the family and Village Troll “enemy” of mental health care in the states that need it most, or limiting overpriced prescriptions that often “cost” more than a teacher’s salary.

For the record, New Radicals rejects any requests from drug companies or anyone asking to change our lyrics (never!), and our editors back this up by saying “no problem”. We would never morally support any type of industry that could contribute to an opioid epidemic that has already killed a million Americans.

Doug, I wonder what song these Silicon Valley jingle masseuses will try next, “Celebrex Sadness”? Well, just one month after our 25th anniversary on July 12th – for any big FDA Pharma bankers out there…come on over, we’re still going to kick your ass!

We are grateful that our music still inspires some young “radical new” athletes and musicians who are also jumping. That ARM Charli XCX loving Kamala’s politics (and more than that we love Charli’s “1999” New Radicals video!), or Travis Kelce tweeting “I have the dreamer disease!” which choked me up because that just means fight for what you believe in!!

In closing Doug, unfortunately violence from toxic politics, BPD “biz con abuse bros” and Covid isolation have catalyzed much of today’s mental health crises leading to conspiratorial family crime. But if anyone can cure or “judge” this, President Kamala Harris can – starting with RFK and Donald J Trump! Sorry, I had to slip in a joke.

Democracy is at stake, not just in the US, but in much of the world, watching closely. With a grieving artistic flourish for my own beloved Korean War vet father, who died tragically wrongfully in mid-May, and my immobile and fragile mother in memory care in Florida, don’t let the darkness shake the light of to the mothers and grandchildren we will make. lose in battle. Save democracy for the next generation and vote with your soul!

And to any DJ or TikToker around the world, always feel free to play and use these songs to support and celebrate women’s, minority and LGBTQ+ rights and the spirit of freedom that thrives and survives around the globe!

Doug, Kamala — You have the music in you. Go lions!! Gregg

PS Doug, Since Broadway is next to our favorite deli, if you’re in NYC when Start again open let’s grab that bagel and go with Adam and Train, Keira and John, Kamala and Danielle to sing “Lost Stars” together!

PPS VOTE!!!

“Lost Stars”, released on Flatiron Records, pre-rescue is here; “Murder On The Dancefloor” pre-save is here. Both are available on DSPs at midnight ET tonight.
