The Reno County Volunteer Center is a central clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities in Reno County. Area non-profit and government organizations have submitted the following requests for assistance. SOUP KITCHEN looking for a volunteer to come to the soup kitchen and bring clothing donations from the outdoor donation bin to the soup kitchen clothing bank. Volunteers could do this once a day as they can, or if they are only available a few times a week, another volunteer could do the other days of the week. Volunteers will need to be able to pick up clothing items and carry them in, sort and hang them.

EAT FRIENDSHIP is looking for more volunteer drivers to deliver meals to people at home. These volunteers would only drive the wheel; another volunteer eats at the doors. A valid driver’s license and a good driving record are required for this position. Volunteers can deliver once a week or more.

FRIENDS Zoo looking for volunteers in the Hutchinson Zoo gift shop. Volunteers will greet zoo visitors, provide information about the zoo, assist customers in the gift shop, assist with merchandise pricing and restocking, operate the cash register, make change and buy bags, and answer the phone the gift shop. Volunteers can also receive donations, membership fees, etc. Volunteers must have good communication skills, pleasant personality, basic computer knowledge as the cash register is linked to the computer system, be able to count down change, be responsible, follow instructions and handle responsibilities without close supervision continue. Volunteers can stay during slow periods. The minimum age is 16 years. Volunteers needed 2pm-5pm Monday, 12pm-5pm Tuesday, 12pm-3pm Wednesday, 10am-1pm Thursday, 10am-5pm Friday and 10:00-17:00 Saturday. Shift times can be negotiated if required.

ROBERT J. DOLE VA MEDICAL CENTER serves veterans at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. Volunteer drivers help veterans get to much-needed medical appointments by driving vans donated by Disabled American Veterans from Hutchinson to Wichita. Veterans often have no other way to make medical appointments without the help of caring volunteers. Volunteer van drivers are needed between 7am and approximately 3pm once a week, or once or twice a month if weekly is not available. Volunteers must pass a physical driver’s test, have a good driving record and a valid driver’s license and insurance.

The Kansas State Fair looking for front desk workers in the administration office to answer and transfer calls, greet people coming into the office, etc. Volunteers needed for four hour shifts from 9am to 4pm daily starting now through the State Fair in September. During the fair, volunteers are also needed in the education center to help staff with children’s activities, help monitor exhibit buildings, assist with animal contests, and assist staff during the marching band contest. Volunteers must be 18 years of age and will have a background check. Volunteers will receive free admission to the state fair and free meal tickets on the days they volunteer during the fair. Volunteers must have a friendly and helpful attitude while dealing with all walks of life during the fair.

COSMOSPHERE looking for volunteers to help out in their CosmoKids area. This STEM area is for kids to learn about space and science and includes building, launching rockets and other exploration activities. Volunteers will be at the desk located in the CosmoKids Zone and hand out activity kits or answer questions as needed. Volunteers are expected to serve 20 hours a year, work well with the general public and children, and be at least 15 years old. Volunteers needed 9am-5pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and 9am-7pm Friday and Saturday. Shorter shift times are available during these hours as well.
