Springfield City Council to consider accepting America’s Rescue Plan funds to cover stormwater drainage improvements

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Springfield City Council will consider Monday night whether or not to accept approximately $400,000 in ARPA funds to cover stormwater drainage and sidewalk improvements in two Springfield neighborhoods.

Areas affected would be Nichols Street from Dickerson to Hutchinson Avenues and Clifton Avenue from Kearney to High Streets.

“We are seeking city council approval to enter into agreements with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for ARPA funding for two projects, both of which will provide stormwater improvements and also provide sidewalks,” said Scott Bachman, transportation planner for the city . .

Stormwater improvements would improve the areas to be consistent with city standards. Neighbors say they don’t see much flooding in those areas, but the city says that doesn’t mean they don’t need upgrading.

“Certainly being able to connect and be consistent with stormwater flow and also provide safety and accessibility by providing sidewalks where they don’t currently exist,” Bachman said.

The two neighborhoods were decided based on their need for both upgrades.

“We looked for areas that needed stormwater improvement. Both areas have open ditches with sewer pipes under the driveway and could be better managed with curbs and gutters, storm water intakes and storm water pipes to manage storm water runoff. It would also allow us to build sidewalks to replace gaps in areas where there were sidewalks that don’t currently exist,” Bachman said.

Bachman says the project will cost just over $466,000. The city is currently in the engineering phase, but will go out for bids starting in the fall, with plans for construction to begin next year.

The city council meeting will take place on Monday at 18:30 at the Regional Police and Firefighter Training Center on West Battlefield.
