Police are looking for a 17-year-old runaway from SSL

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4) — A 17-year-old ran away from home on Sunday, again South Salt Lake Police Department asked the public to let officers know if they have any information on where she might be located.

Ava Montoya, 17, is said to have run away from home around 5am on Sunday, June 2nd. According to police, she is approximately 5’4″ and weighs approximately 150 pounds. Police said she was last seen carrying a pink backpack and wearing a red jacket.

If contacting the South Salt Lake Police Department regarding Ava’s whereabouts, Utahns were asked to reference case number LK2024-17639. The department can be reached at 801-412-3600.

More than 600,000 people go missing each year in the United States, according to the data National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

Here are some suggestions to keep in mind if someone you know disappears.

Utah officials suggest taking notes on interactions with law enforcement to keep track of details such as officers’ names, dates and times of interactions, case numbers and what officers say.

When working with local law enforcement to report a missing person, it is recommended that you share as much information as possible about the missing person, including but not limited to:

  • Full name or nicknames.
  • Recent photos.
  • Date of birth and age at time of disappearance.
  • Gender/sex.
  • Detailed physical description (including unique scars or tattoos).
  • Date of disappearance.
  • Medical conditions.
  • Last known location.
  • Social media accounts.
