Springfield man says his rental apartment is making him sick and wants mold problems fixed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A Springfield man says his rental home is making him sick.

After trying to get her property management to fix the problem, she turned to us for help.

Bradley Arnold said: “I’d like my apartment to be livable so I can go out and go back to work without waking up in the morning and feeling like I’m going to die.”

He says his Beacon Village apartment in northwest Springfield has been causing him health problems for about 3 years.

“I wake up and my eyes are swollen, almost swollen shut and I can’t breathe. I wake up in the morning wheezing,” Arnold explained.

He says he relies on medication to cope.

“Oh, I have a whole bunch of allergy medicine just for living in my apartment,” he said.

Bradley says the extreme humidity problem he’s experiencing in his home has led to mold.

“It was so bad before we got the dehumidifier that if I did a load of laundry and left it in the bathroom, the laundry would be wet before I had a chance to put it away. It would come out of the dryer completely dry, absorb the moisture,” he said.

Arnold says he tried to bring these issues to the attention of property managers.

“They keep bartering with property managers and they keep getting rid of people,” he said. “The minute someone starts solving the problem, then there’s going to be someone new in the office, and you can’t get your hands on anyone to actually do what they’ve already worked on.”

While he says some of the mold issues have been resolved, he says he would like to see long-term solutions.

“I’m working to pay for a place that’s basically killing me,” he said.

I called the property management company for Beacon Village. No one was available to talk about the issues but we were told someone would call us back.

Arnold tells us he got a phone call about repairs shortly after our inquiry.
