Any sea wall is bad

A May 26 Post and Courier editorial, “Sea wall would protect Charleston peninsula but destroy SC beaches,” is, to put it politely, dishonest.

Personally, I am not in favor of any seawall.

The editorial states that our barrier islands are giant sands that erode and accumulate as a natural part of our planet’s evolution, and building a wall creates a battle between the public beach and homes, hotels and restaurants.

The editorial then argues that a seawall around the peninsula is different and justifiable because it holds back the harbor and the Ashley and Cooper rivers.

This is mental gymnastics worthy of Houdini.

The editorial justifies a seawall around the peninsula to protect homes, hotels and restaurants, but fails to mention that it would destroy the marsh environment, the ecology around the peninsula, and also cause erosion downstream, as a seawall does on a barrier island.

Ask the same coastal geologist.

Senn’s file

Thanks to editorial writer Cindi Ross Scoppe for clearing things up about Sen. Sandy Senn and Rep. Matt Leber. I found the attack on Senator Senn’s character in the news article hard to believe.

I always got honest and direct answers from the many questions I asked her. I frequently email or call with them when she emails her weekly report. She always responds in a reasonable amount of time. She is willing to stand up for what she believes and is able to defend her position. Sometimes I disagree, but I consider her both my friend and my senator.

As for Rep. Leber, I asked to see his DD-214, a Department of Defense form that includes service record and awards received. I have received no response, even though these forms are created so that they can be shared with others.

I have had every clearance for every type of classified information during my naval career. None of this is showing on my DD-214. It only shows when and where I served and any medals awarded and is required to get any kind of benefits from the VA or elsewhere.

Celebrate 3 women

The extraordinary tenure of a trio of women will have a lasting impact on the cultural richness of Charleston.

When we arrived in Charleston in 2011, we were enveloped by the dynamism of the Historic Charleston Foundation, Kitty Robinson promoting and preserving the historic fabric of the city.

Anne Cleveland captivated everyone with her transformation of the Charleston Library Society into a warm and engaging space, supporting literary moments and events.

Angela Mack at the Gibbes Art Museum is making an amazing mark with a stunning celebration of the visual arts, a glorious 2016 museum renovation, various acquisitions, stunning exhibits, programs, and the distinguished conference series that has garnered support from young people.

This trio of women created a lasting legacy and should be celebrated by Charleston.

Shifting sand on IOP

So let me get this straight: Isle of Palms wants to remove sand from a public beach from 44th to 53rd Avenue and use it to restore the essentially private beach at Wild Dunes.

Something is wrong with this.
