Well-known Samoan writer accused of murdering Tulsi Gabbard’s aunt

Samoan playwright Papalii Sia Figiel has been charged with murdering UH professor Caroline Sinavaiana-Gabbard, the aunt of former Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. Figiel was first arrested on charges of manslaughter.

However, the charges were upgraded after police found “incriminating” evidence such as a small knife and a hammer. It was reported that Gabbard was Figiel’s and that the two were colleagues.

The 78-year-old victim was the sister of Hawaii state senator Mike Gabbard. She was also the first person of Samoan descent to become a teacher in the United States.

The two women were described as friends. According to local media, the crime took place on May 25. Samoa Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo said the two women argued at Figiel’s home before Gabbard was killed.

Authorities revealed Gabbard suffered multiple stab wounds. After the murder, Figiel went to another friend’s house.

Police Commissioner Filipo said: “It was only on Sunday morning, while having breakfast, that (Figiel) told her friend what had happened.” Following the incident, Figiel surrendered to the police.

Figiel is due to appear in court next month.
