Lexington Legends host ‘Eazy Watkins Night’ to raise funds for Georgetown crash survivor

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Throwing a pitch at a Lexington Legends baseball game is a dream for any young player, but for nine-year-old Easton Watkins, there was a time when his family didn’t know if he would ever be able to throw again .

“At first, I had no idea. I thought he just had a broken arm and maybe he had been hit, and once we heard the helicopter flying over us, we knew something was very wrong,” said Watkins’ mother, Tara Watkins.

The Georgetown native was in a serious car accident in February.

Although he goes by the name Eazy, his recovery journey has been anything but.

With long hospital stays and physical therapy, his family was slapped with some big bills until they got a phone call they never expected.

“Justin called us when we were still in rehab and basically said you know, whatever you want, we’ll do for you,” Watkins said. “When he called and said he was the Legends manager, Easton’s mouth dropped.”

That’s how Eazy Watkins Night at Legends Field, a fundraising opportunity for the family, came to be.

“I knew they would help, but they wouldn’t like it that much,” Eazy said.

“Everyone has been so welcoming and amazing to him here, it means the absolute world to us,” added Tara Watkins.

Tara Watkins said it’s a full-circle moment for him, becoming a big part of the sport she says got him through his darkest days.

“He was still in a coma with his eyes closed, but we put a baseball in his hand and he showed us how to hold a double stitch,” she said. “He told us he was here and good and baseball really did that for him.”

At the game, there was also a special Eazy jersey that was signed by the players and auctioned off, with proceeds going towards Eazy’s recovery journey.
