Vandals hit the Shay Park Railroad in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS Vandalism discovered at the Shay Park Railroad Saturday morning closed the park for the day.

Shay Park Railway — hosted by the Utah Live Steamers Railroad Club — offers free rides on a miniature railroad every other Saturday during the summer.

When organizers came to open the park on Saturday morning, they noticed that part of the track was damaged.

“We arrived at the park this morning to set up trains and unfortunately there was some vandalism to the track,” the Orangizers wrote in a Facebook post. “Trains will be delayed today and may not run. I contacted the Saratoga Springs PD to come and make a report.”

Organizers spent most of Saturday morning making repairs. They said the track will need to be replaced in a few parts of the track.

“Being in a public park, unfortunately this could happen,” a Facebook post said. “We’re able to resolve this and put those smiles back on our faces and enjoy rail the way it’s meant to be.”

Later Saturday, park officials canceled rides for the day.

“Sorry for the inconvenience, but train travel is canceled today,” a Facebook post read.

Organizers are asking anyone who may have seen any ATVs in the area between Tuesday and Saturday morning to contact them. Park officials are offering a $100 reward for information leading to charges against those responsible.

Organizers hope to make repairs before the next riding session on June 15.
