In this election battle for the 32 assembly seats, the main contenders are Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). Other significant parties in the fray include the BJP and the Congress. SKM is currently ruling the state with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang at the helm. SKM is seeking to retain power for a second consecutive term, while the SDF, which dominated the state’s political landscape for 25 years until 2019, is making a bid to regain its former status.

To secure a majority and form the government, a party needs at least 17 seats. In the 2019 elections, SKM managed to win exactly 17 seats, which allowed Prem Singh Tamang to become the Chief Minister. On the other hand, the current SDF remained with 15 seats. This marked a significant turnaround from the 2014 elections, in which the SDF won 22 seats, giving Pawan Kumar Chamling a fifth consecutive term as chief minister.

As the count progresses, all eyes will be on whether SKM can hold their position or if SDF will make a strong comeback.
