Chad Daybell sentenced to death

BOISE, Idaho — An Ada County jury sentenced Chad Daybell to death Saturday. The decision came two days after a jury convicted Daybell of the murders of Tylee Ryan, JJ Vallow and Tammy Daybell.

Daybell has 30 days to file an appeal as well will be transported to Idaho State Prison, according to KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas.

Skordas said if Daybell appeals, he will likely have a new attorney representing him. A new lawyer may be needed because the previous lawyer may find it difficult to find fault in his own defense.

From there would be the state defend against appeals until they are exhausted in the state system. After that, the case will go to the federal courts.

With the sentencing phase happening so quickly after the trial, Skordas said there are concerns about what will come next.

“This case moved very quickly,” Skordas said.

“Maybe the rules in Idaho are a little different but Are very worried that the penalty phase occurred so quickly after the trial and while Chad was still a kind of trial to accept what had just happened.”

According to Skordas, the speed of the trial to the penalty phase could give Daybell some sort of defense.

This is because Daybell could claim that he did not fully understand what was going on. Or how it could made people speak in his defense.

Inside the courtroom

She was described as calm as the doors closed behind the audience at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho.

KSL TV reporter Lauren Steinbrecher reported from the courtroom that Daybell was sitting in his seat. Not looking forward to anything in particular, the courtroom lit up as he spoke.

Kay Woodcock, Larry Woodcock, Colby Ryan, Tammy Daybell’s aunt Vicki Hoban, Tammy Daybell’s siblings including the Gwilliams were seen in public.

Tammy Daybell’s father, Ron Douglas and Michael Douglas were not in attendance as they were said to have left on a plane.

Steinbrecher said a woman in attendance drove from North Salt Lake at 2:00 a.m. Saturday to be there. The woman was also present at Lori Vallow Daybell’s sentencing a year ago.
