Chicago Cubs minor league close: June 1

right handed pitcher Julio Teheran opted out of his contract with the Cubs and was released.

Iowa chickens

The Iowa Cubs clipped the wings of the Louisville Bats (Reds), score 3-2.

Thomas Pannone pitched the first five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. One of the hits was a solo home run by former Cub PJ Higgins. Pannone walked two and struck out three.

Victoria went to Sam McWilliams with two scoreless innings of relief. McWilliams struck out three and walked one.

José Cuas and Carl Edwards Jr. retired the team in order in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Cuas struck out all three hitters and Edwards struck out two.

Left player Owen Caissie broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, his fourth of the season. In the third inning, Caissie hit a two-run double, so she had all three RBIs for the I-Cubs. Caisse went 3-for-4.

Third baseman BJ Murray Jr. went 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored on Caissie’s double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies blanked the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 4-0.

Trey Supak started and earned the win with five innings of work, allowing four hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Frankie Scalzo Jr. already picked up his seventh save in 1.2 innings of relief. He didn’t give up a hit, but walked one while striking out two. Scalzo hasn’t allowed a run over 20.2 innings this year.

Third baseman Luis Verdugo had an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. He went 1 for 4.

AD Ezequiel Pagan hit an RBI triple in the fourth. He was 1 for 3 with a walk.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were pounded by the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals), 13-4.

Beginner Aaron Perry took the loss after being hit for seven runs on eight hits over 4 innings. One of the seven runs was unearned. Perry walked two and struck out two.

Third baseman Peter Ramirez hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to break the game open. It was his third home run of the season. Ramirez went 1-for-4.

South Bend scored three more runs in the top of the ninth. Catcher Dian Granadillo, in just his second game this year, hit a two-run home run. This was his only at-bat of the game.

Rafael Morel hit an RBI double in the ninth. He scored on Granadillo’s home team. Morel went 2 for 4.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans blanked the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 9-0.

Beginner Juan Bello allowed a single to the second hitter of the game. The RiverDogs didn’t get another hit the rest of the way as three Birds pitchers combined for one hit, striking out 18 RiverDogs along the way.

Bello pitched four innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

Marino Santy he got the win after pitching the next four innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

Francis Reynoso pitched the ninth inning. He walked one and struck out two.

Third baseman Reginald Preciado went 3-for-5 with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Preciado also scored once.

Central shed Alfonsin Rosario he was 2 for 4 with a two-run triple in the sixth. He also went once.

AD Ismael Mena he went a perfect 2-for-2 with a triple and two walks. Mean scored three points.

Short break Cristian Hernandez he was 1 for 3 with two walks and a stolen base. He scored twice and had an RBI.

Right player Jacob Wetzel had a two-run triple in the third inning. The two RBIs made Wetzel the Pelicans career RBI leader with 117.
