Florida band director attacked and injured after Miami game

The ugliness of No. 8 Florida’s sloppy win over Miami on Saturday wasn’t limited to the game.

A Gators spokesman said Sunday that band director Jay Watkins was injured in an attack by a fan in Miami after the game, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

According to the spokesman, the incident occurred as members of the Florida team were returning to the bus after the 24-20 victory. Apparently, a fan from Miami tried to get through the group, which caught Watkins’ attention.

What happened from there, according to the Sentinel:

Warden Jay Watkins “went out to try to stop this person and when he did, someone else grabbed him from behind and threw him to the sidewalk,” Orlando said.

Watkins suffered bumps and scratches to his head and elbow, was treated by a paramedic and boarded a bus back to Gainesville.

The Orlando Police Department reportedly said Watkins declined to press charges, but wanted an incident report to be filed. No description of Watkins’ attacker was provided.

No member of the student band was injured, although one woman was apparently so upset that her nose began to bleed.

One such incident is a sad footnote to Florida’s Week 0 win, in which the Gators and Hurricanes traded touchdowns and turnovers until Florida’s defense finally got a few stops to close the game.
