Should the Milwaukee Brewers pursue a reunion with a 2023 contributor?

The Milwaukee Brewers were division champions in 2023. It took a team effort to make it happen, where more players were added as the season progressed. A few guys who joined after Opening Day and had roles in their success were Trevor Megill, Julio Teheran, Josh Donaldson, Jahmai Jones, Carlos Santana, Mark Canha and Raimel Tapia.

Recently, one of those contributors from the 2023 season became available. This article will explore whether a reunion should be considered.

Julio Teheran has opted out of his minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.

After being designated for assignment before the playoffs last fall, Julio Teheran was with three different organizations. He signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles in February, signed with the Mets after Opening Day where he was designated for assignment after an MLB outing, and then signed with the Chicago Cubs. Joel Sherman has reported that he is now opting out of his minor league contract and will be a free agent.

The Milwaukee Brewers just optioned starting pitcher Tobias Myers to the minor leagues.

Before Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox (handing the Brewers their 10th straight loss), they optioned rookie pitcher Tobias Myers to the minor leagues. He had operated in a starting pitcher role for them. As a result, Janson Junk was recalled, but it is not a guarantee that he will take Myers’ spot in the rotation. With a spot open on the 40-man roster, Milwaukee could consider signing Julio Teheran to start on Wednesday, June 5 against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

After signing days before Memorial Day 2023, Julio Teheran went on to have immediate success with the Brewers last year. In six starts, he had a 1.53 ERA and went six or more innings on four occasions. He then gave up 13 earned runs in starts seven and eight and spent time on the injured list. He was unable to recapture his early season success, moved to a reliever role and was released a few days before the end of the regular season.

With the Brewers in need of a starting pitcher for the middle of next week, it’s possible that Milwaukee and Julio Teheran will meet again. If that happens, his tenure would depend on a few things, including his performance as well as when Jakob Junis, DL Hall Joe Ross can return.
