Willy Adames does the hard work

Facing one of the hardest pitchers in the major leagues with the game on the line, Willy Adames had a single.

“Just try to touch the ball, man,” he said. – Throw gas.

And hit the ball Adames did, pulling a 100.1 mph fastball from Michael Kopech deep in the hole at shortstop to drive in William Contreras with the clinching run in a 4-3 victory in the 10 innings on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.

Adames did more than provide the road as well; it was his two-out, two-run single in the seventh that brought what had been an overmatched offense through the first six innings back to even.

“I think as the game goes on, you get more locked in,” Adames said. “I think that’s what’s happening to me. We’re feeding off each other and as the game goes on, I feel like everybody’s getting more excited and interested in the game compared to the first two halves.”

It was the fourth straight win for Milwaukee, which improved to a record 12 games over .500 at 35-23, and the third of the walkoff variety.

Adames was the only player with more hits for the Brewers, who managed just seven for the game.

The brewers go to extras for the fifth time

Kopech was on the mound for the second inning after blowing the side in the ninth and leading off by intentionally walking Christian Yelich. Then, with Adames in the box, a wild pitch allowed Yelich and Contreras, the “ghost” runner, to advance into scoring position.

Adames finally fed up with Kopech’s fifth offering to shoot it in the hole from short break. A diving Zach Remillard got a glove on the ball but failed to learn it and it leaked as Contreras singled to the plate.

“I’m just trying to put the ball in play. Especially in this situation,” Adames said. “If you try to do too much with it, you don’t stand a chance. I just tried to touch the ball and see what happens after that and we were lucky enough to get the ball past the infield.”

Having already put Yelich and Rhys Hoskins slowly after Adames, Chicago’s strategy of throwing Adames in this situation could be under some scrutiny.

“I thought they were going to go, maybe, but he was attacking right away,” Adames said. “Then after that, my mentality was just to put the ball in play. Especially after he threw the wild pitch and (the runner) was 90 yards away.”

Milwaukee improved to 3-2 in extra-inning games, while Chicago dropped its 10th straight game.

Trevor Megill returns

Pitching for the first time since taking a line drive off his right forearm on Tuesday, Trevor Megill looked good as he hit 99 mph a couple of times on the radar gun and struck out the side in the seventh.

“The last three days of playing catch, it felt kind of good,” Megill said of his arm. “I was able to throw relatively pain-free. The ball was kind of spray-charting for the first day or two, then yesterday and today things kind of kicked off a little bit. Things loosened up and some of the inflammation came out. of the arm.

“I’ve been pleased with the way everything has progressed over the last couple of days.”

Megill’s half inning set the stage for Adames’ first big hit of the day, which came after Milwaukee drew three walks against the Chicago bullpen in the bottom of the frame.

Adames then lined a single to center against right-hander Jordan Leasure, driving in a pair and tying the score at 3-3.

“The team came together,” Megill said. “I was happy to be part of a ‘nil’ and a win.”

Robert Gasser just wasn’t having it

The Brewers have now won all five of rookie Robert Gasser’s starts.

But for the first time since being called up, the left-hander wasn’t sharp. He threw 77 pitches in five innings but allowed seven hits and three runs on three hits.

Two of the hits were home runs — the first by Andrew Benintendi to lead off the third inning and the second by Gavin Sheets’ two-run shot in the fourth that gave the White Sox a 3-run lead -1.

The homers were Gasser’s first two in the majors.

“He just wasn’t done with anything,” manager Pat Murphy said. “He didn’t look super sharp. No swing and miss. It’s not normal, but he still filled the zone. But I’m starting to think they have a spike with so many barrels on the ball.

“It just didn’t feel right. But he competed.”

Gasser later took responsibility for his performance.

“I wasn’t as sharp as I wanted to be today; a couple of shots trickled up the middle and got hit. That’s part of the game,” he said. “I think there was a lot of adrenaline in the last game (against the Chicago Cubs) and today I wasn’t able to match it and find the same edge that I had last time.

“So, I’ll work on it.”

Garrett Crochet was dominant

Gasser, who really only generated six swings and misses, stood in stark contrast to Chicago left-hander Garrett Crochet. He dominated the Brewers over six innings and 103 pitches, scattering five hits, one run and one walk with eight strikeouts.

Crochet, by comparison, got 19 swings and misses against a Milwaukee offense that pounded out a major-league-high 23 hits in Friday’s 12-5 victory.

“Attack today,” Adames said. “He had power stuff and we couldn’t do much against him. He just overwhelmed us today. He has an incredible fastball and the cutter was incredible.

“You have to give him credit. After the night the guys had tonight, he came in and shut us down. Then after that, we did the damage.”

The Brewers’ only run scored against Crochet came in the third when Brice Turang singled, stole second and scored on a double to left-center by Joey Ortiz.

Yelich singled off Crochet in the first inning, hitting him in six consecutive at-bats dating back to Friday night.

Moving the list

Before the game, Milwaukee traded last night’s starter Tobias Myers for another bullpen arm in righty Janson Junk.
