Alex De Minaur hopes a lucky mascot will follow him to French Open glory

Australia’s Alex De Minaur is looking for his lucky new mascot at the French Open.

De Minaur revealed he was cheered on by a young spectator from the first point to the last of his third-round victory over Jan-Lennard Struff.

The four-set victory lasted nearly three hours but was punctuated by a five-hour rain delay.

De Minaur, boyfriend of Britain’s Katie Boulter, said: “That lad was there from the first point to the last – with a five-hour rain delay.

“He was this little kid that every turnover, every point I won, he was screaming in my face. I look at it and think if I was a fan I’d probably go back home because it was so damn cold out there.

“I just hugged him. I was, like, “mate”… It was a relief more than anything. Was awesome. I appreciate this kid.

“You know, yeah, the fact that he spent 10 hours in court today in the freezing cold, I was happy that I was able to win with him.”

De Minaur later urged his newest fan to get in touch and support him for his next match against Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev.

The 11th seed wrote on social media: “I need to find this legend’s name!!! Send me a message on Instagram, I need you for the next round.”
